Ceramics Mold
Mass-producing handmade artwork.
While in school we visited a statue studio and got to see how they are made. It is intriguing to see how hand crafted art transforms into highly executed models, that are replicated and scattered around the country. Becoming the iconic pieces we recognize on streets.
Here too, there is a similar process, where a singular hand made dish transforms into a collection.

From One To A Ton
The Original Prototype
The original dish I made out of clay. For a more symmetrical look or intricate design, you can use a 3D printer to create the prototype.

The Mold
The next step is to form walls around your model, as if it's been placed in a container, and latch them together tightly. Then I poured runny plaster until the model is covered well. Once dried, I removed the clay prototype, leaving just the mold.

More And More!
Now that the mold is made, it's time to re-produce.
I poured clay slip into the mold, and waited a few minutes. During this time the clay begins to harden, forming a brim around the mold. I poured out the remaining clay, leaving just the brim. Once dried the brim will become the new dish.

Finishing Touches
Time to have fun. I used sand paper to smooth out the dish, and put it in a special oven to harden. At this point the dish looks like one you'd receive at a pottery store. So just choose your paint, sit back, and relax...
Then I placed it in the oven again, to dry. Lastly I dipped the dish into a glaze and place it in the oven to dry. Once out, the dish looks just perfect, it's glossy, smooth and ready to be used at home, or sold in a dish store.
